Engineered side entry mixers for industrial process and storage tanks

Side entry agitators that mount on the tank wall, so the drive stays at ground level. Each one is sized for your tank and your process, and made to order in our Pune works.

  • 2.2 to 37 kW, at 280 or 450 rpm
  • Gear or single-stage belt drive; hydrofoil or propeller impeller
  • Single or double mechanical seal; SS 304 / SS 316 wetted parts

Why a side entry mixer?

On a tank that is wide compared with its height, a side entry mixer usually does the job with less installed cost than a top entry agitator. The tank roof carries no load, the shaft is short, and the drive can be serviced from the ground.

No roof structure

Nothing hangs from the roof, so floating roofs and light cone roofs need no bridge or reinforcement.

Short shaft

The shaft only reaches a short way into the tank. That keeps it stiff, light and inexpensive.

Ground-level service

Motor, belts, bearings and seal are all outside the tank and reachable without cranes or roof access.

Whole-tank turnover

The jet along the floor sets the whole tank turning, which blends it and limits settling.

What goes into every unit

Every side entry mixer we supply is engineered for the tank it goes on. We do not pick a model by motor rating alone.

How we size it

Your tank data

Diameter, liquid height, product, specific gravity, viscosity, temperature and pressure, and what the mixer must do.

Duty and power

We set the power for the duty (blending, sludge control, stock circulation or solids suspension) and work out how many units the tank needs.

Mechanical design

Propeller, shaft, bearings and seal are checked against the forces on them, and we fix where the units sit on the tank.

Offer and drawing

You get a technical offer with a GA drawing, the nozzle details and a price.

Common questions

What is a side entry mixer?
A side entry mixer (or side entry agitator) is a propeller mixer that enters a tank through a nozzle in the side wall near the bottom, instead of hanging from the roof. The motor and drive stay outside the tank at ground level. The propeller throws a jet across the floor that sets the whole tank turning, which blends the contents and keeps sludge or solids from settling.
Where are side entry mixers used?
They are used where tanks are large and a top-entry agitator would need a long shaft and a heavy roof structure. FMT supplies them for oil and gas storage, FGD limestone slurry, milk storage, edible oil, pulp stock chests, water and wastewater, distillery tanks, and CBG and biogas digesters. Suitability depends on the actual tank and process.
How many side entry mixers does a tank need?
It depends on tank diameter, liquid height, product viscosity and what the mixer must achieve. Small tanks often need one unit; large crude oil tanks commonly use two to four mixers grouped on one side of the shell. We work this out from your tank data and tell you the number, size and motor power.
Can a side entry mixer be fitted to an existing tank?
Yes. It needs a flanged nozzle on the lower shell. If your tank does not have one, a nozzle can be added during a planned shutdown. We give you the nozzle size, elevation and orientation with our offer.
